The qualified group of experts of Telecom Unit provides a powerful workforce for a true cooperation with customers, usually by means of joint working teams. This is the best way to perform the technology transfer service, to convert theoretical ideas into valuable and useful solutions and to guarantee an optimal Time-To-Market, minimising at the same time the risk for the customer in the early stages of the development of a new telecommunication innovation. This specific knowledge is also transferred successfully to firms in other activity sectors of industry, that demand advanced wired or wireless connectivity for their products. .

Pre-competitive Research

Telecom carries out pre-competitive research in close cooperation with customers and partners in the field of Telecommunications. These activities are usually performed with the support of national and international programmes and consist of applied research, adaptation, and experimental validation in the field of Telecommunications, addressing current and future market needs. Pre-competitive activities are funded through competitive programmes managed by public administrations at European, Spanish, Basque and Biscay levels.

Project results are packaged into R&D assets and Industrial and Intellectual Property Rights, such as platforms, utilities, reference models and designs, putting the emphasis on ensuring an effective Technology Transfer to the market.

Technology & Products

The “Powered by TECNALIA” Programme provides the business community with the Applied Research results from the different Programmes in which Telecom Unit participates. It is the ideal solution for new product innovation. The Programme is a set of R+D Assets and Industrial and Intellectual Property Rights, such as platforms, utilities, reference models and designs that can be used by organisations to enhance their innovation capacity.

The continuous transformation of current broadband networks requires addressing key innovations to satisfy the communication needs of the modern society. The knowledge is concentrated on access and metropolitan domains.

Wireless Systems

Building the future connected world requires the knowledge of disciplines such as Ad-hoc and Wireless Sensor Networks, Machine-to-Machine or self configuring networks and devices, emphasizing their applications for Smart Environments at home, at transport or at any public infrastructure.

This Area is organised into three Research Groups:

• Home Systems & Audiovisual
• Vehicle Telematics & Intelligent Transport Systems
• Wireless Object Networks & M2M

Service Platforms

Innovation is moving towards a unified model for exploitation and services over different networks, with the convergence of fixed-mobile networks and the unification of service provision platforms.
