SafeCity: Public Security in Smart Cities

The lack of public security has become in recent years one of the main issues that concern to citizens and one of the great challenges of contemporary societies.

People have the need to seek security by reducing our level of vulnerability to different hazards and threats that we face everyday: econominc, social, environmental, military... The characteristics of these threats maka us think thath the pursuit of security must be a collective effort in which all people participate.

SafeCity is an european project  europeo framed within de Future Internet initiative (FI-PPP). During 24 months will investigate public safety in smart cities in order to facilitate people to feel protected making their environments more secure.

SafeCity has an importan participation of end users, both partners (Madrid council) as partners (Stockholm, Bucarest, etc), to ensure that the results are fully applicable in the near future.

SafeCity technical developments revolve around 4 functional areas: ambient intelligence, ad-hoc networks, public warning systems and command centers. Within these areas the project develops 8 aplications that will be validated through prototypes in 2 cities with very different characteristics: Madrid y Estocolmo.

The develop of SafeCity will use the following methodology:

1. The definition of specific scenarios considering the involvement of main cities in Europe as Madrid, Helsinki, Athens, Bucharest, tockholm etc along others.

2. Collection of specific enablers, technical and functional requirements on the Future Internet in relation with Public Safety in contraposition of the generic ones and how the business process may be supported.

3. Elaboration of a conceptual Safecity prototypes on safety making trials to study the feasibility of this initiative. The concept demonstration will take place in the city of Madrid.

 In just two years we can see the results of this interesting project where participate, among others, Isdefe (Ingeniería de Sistemas para la Defensa de España, S.A.); HI Iberia and TECNALIA
