Tecnalia. Inspiring Business
An open innovation platform and tools for the creation of mobile applications that support recent technologies
TECNALIA, within important companies as Telefónica and Orange,a mong others, is working in providing an open innovation platform and tools for the creation of mobile applications that support recent technologies such as Near Field Communication (NFC), seamless integration of multiple secure domains, and interoperability of services such as payments at the European level.
TECNALIA, working with several companies, will provide a short time to market for mobile applications. Mobile application development can be associated with complex, expensive processes and the majority of emerging enterprise mobile solutions, platforms or tools are technically and financially out-of-reach for many small innovative business applications. Systems at this range are generally more complex, server-based systems targeting large corporations or government departments.
This will be an Open Platform and tools designed around a reusable reference architecture; an open software development system which will permit the use of multiple secure areas such as the SIM card, On Board Credentials (OBC) or SD Cards, define and public interfaces and APIs for developing applications or providing services, and prove the interoperability this platform using multiple national demonstrators.
"SEMOSA will allow to connect and interact with a trusted service"
The project, called SEMOSA (Single European Open Mobile Services Area), will allow these applications to connect and interact with a trusted service like a payment application or a mobile ID transparent of the ecosystem. A common open platform allows any 3rd party to integrate with the platform and to add features or functionality. This will lead to new innovations that SEMOSA may not have conceived of. In the long run the ecosystems will consist of software components or modules that are either commercial or open source or both.
SEMOSA will not invent new standards. It will use existing and recognized standards for payments and NFC. SEMOSA solutions for payments and NFC will be based on a converging evolution of existing contactless standards toward the goal of global interoperability. Today, there are many systems that are demonstrated inside a particular ecosystem with special provisions, but none of these systems are able to demonstrate the interoperability of these innovative mobile applications; we cannot pay a German train ticket with a Turkish payment solution. These ecosystems simply cannot talk to each other. SEMOSA will aim to demonstrate the easy development and interoperability of these ecosystems for trusted services such as payments.
SEMOSA will provide a widely applicable open platform for mobile applications due to the following factors:
