"Fast in Charge": Charging while driving will be possible in the future

2013.10.14

New concepts of energy management for transport and mobility

Fast In Charge

New concepts for electric & hybrid vehicles charging are being presently developed, as the importance and extension of these cars is growing dramatically, as well as its use in cities. Conventional charging systems have been using electrical cable plug in systems to connect vehicle and energy supply infrastructure. Wireless charging systems avoid these physical connection reducing inconveniences and safety risks involved in the operation.

TECNALIA is fully commited with this technology and among the current lines of investigation the developing of a wireless inductive charger for electric vehicles based on the magnetic resonance coupling principle. The system is able to transmit 3.3 kW between coils through a 20 cm (7.87 inch) gap with 93% efficiency. Communication between primary and secondary systems allows an accurate fitting that maximizes efficiency and minimizes losses. A specific power converter has been also developed for the modulation of the signal supplied to the primary coil. Additionally, a simulation platform computes the spatial distribution of magnetic field, optimizing the design and guaranteeing system safety.

On the side of the vehicles, TECNALIA is participating in the Project "Fast In Charge". Besides other partners, like BATZ, CRF, TUG, ACWS, COmmune du Douai, Euroquality and ICCS, and leaded by DBT, in which another approach is being done to the charging on line, analizing the problem from the road and vehicle point of view.

On October 15th, during two days, all the partners will gathered in Paris to held a review meeting to coordinate actions and therefore reach project objectives.
