TECNALIA presents the first cable robot which prints in 3D large pieces.

The robot has been developed in collaboration with the Catalan Institute IAAC and will be presented at the BBConstrumat fair.

This cable robot allows the creation in situ of large customized pieces, even small buildings. This innovative technology that includes the latest advances in the field of robotics, digital fabrication and 3D printing, has been developed together with the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia IAAC. The new cable robot, known as Cogiro, is able to customize pieces and to obtain information of the state of the construction in real time. This way, the foundation of the construction is improved by obtaining the thermal data of the state of drying of the structures. Thus, overlapping layers of material on still fresh and unstable bases is avoided, among other improvements.

The innovative system is based on a 15 x 11 x 6m robot that integrates a 3D printing machine with a workspace of 13.6 x 9.4 x 3.3m. It contains an extruder for clay material which also will soon be available in cementitious material. The robot is able to access to large work spaces ensuring rigidity that guarantees the precision of the parts to be manufactured, by controlling three displacements and three turns.

With easy installation and low maintenance costs, cable robotics reinforces its transversal character as technology applicable to other construction executions, such as the assembly and automatic maintenance of curtain walls. And in sectors such as logistics, aeronautics, renewable energy, naval and nuclear for handling and automatic assembly of small and large parts, as well as for automation of processes such as painting, inspection and monitoring. The possibility of printing any part that has been modeled previously in a computer, changes the conception of production and it´s abilities to customize the final product.

The prototype of the cable robot is located at TECNALIA's facilities in Montpellier (France) and it will be presented at the BBConstrumat fair in May.
