New methodology for detailed climate risk assessment

2018.06.25

The methodology will guarantee that project design considers climate variability and climate change

We have developed a methodology in association with the Environmental Hydraulic Institute of the University of Cantabria that focuses on guaranteeing that climate variability and climate change are taken into account when designing projects. The methodology will be used by the Corporación Andina de Fomento (CAF) - the Development Bank of Latin America in a series of projects that have shown a potential risk level pursuant to their Preliminary Climate Risk Assessment (PCRA).

The Detailed Climate Risk Assessment (DCRA) will consider:

  • The climate models of the region in which the evaluated project will be developed. The elaboration of regional climate forecast studies will be considered, if such information were not available.
  • The climate risk level of the project, considering different timeframes, identifying and evaluating the deriving impact and significant opportunities. The proposal of activities that would allow for the reduction of the climate risk level and/or use other possible effects that could derive from them.
  • Information on these activities and the proposal to prioritise their implementation, depending on the results of the assessment.
