PHOTOCATALYTIC COATINGS AGAINST INFECTIONS

2015.10.20

TECNALIA is participating in the development of anti-microbial and self-cleaning composite coatings for metallic objects

Infection prevention measures aim to ensure the protection of people who might be vulnerable to acquiring an infection. The basic principle of infection prevention and control is hygiene, but hygiene practices are not enough to fight against infections. The estimated annual cost of medical care for treating infectious diseases in Europe is about €120 billion while HealthCare Acquired Infections are directly responsible for approximately 37,000 deaths annually and contribute to a further 110,000 across the EU. Inanimate objects are responsible for almost the 50% of disease transmission in public places and hospitals.

On the framework of AMSCopper initiative “Anti-microbial & self-cleaning copper based composite coatings applied in metallic objects against infections transmission”, novel photocatalytic coatings to fight infection transmission are in development. These innovative coatings consist on a copper based matrix and doped-TiO2 nano-particles as reinforcing means that will be easily applied, via electrodeposition techniques, in almost every metallic surface. This application in various metallic potential reservoirs of communicable viruses such as handles, door knobs or rails will decrease the risk of infection by a factor higher than 50%.

AMSCopper is a two years FP7 Project funded by the European Commission. The AMSCopper consortium brings together relevant players in the whole value chain of the fight against infections such as the Centre for Research & Technology (CERTH), Greece; Axon Engineering S.A., Greece; Ceramic Powder Technology (CerPoTech), Norway; Tecnochimica Srl, Italy; Electrolíticos Lofran S.A., Spain; Brunel University, UK; TECNALIA, Spain; and Metropolitan Hospital, Greece.
