Recycling and replacement of the platinum group metals in automotive catalysts to reduce the risk associated with their supply

2020.11.16

The technological solutions have been tested in public authority vehicles

The Platinum group metals are some of the rarest and hardest to produce elements on Earth. Therefore, use of this type of material in the manufacturing of products, such as some of the most important products for the EU and for its automotive industry, pose a very high risk due to the uncertainty of supply.

The INNOCAT initiative addresses this problem on two fronts: an innovative technological solution in the field of recycling and substitution of these critical materials, Platinum group metals, in vehicle catalysts.

The scope of this initiative has been European Union countries and associated states that are modest and moderate in innovation (the so-called EIT-RIS - Regional Innovation Scheme countries), in which INNOCAT has fostered the construction of innovation communities or ecosystems in order to stimulate the emergence of start-ups, encouraging increased business development, based on the marketing potential of these technologies.

The benefits of this approach have been seen in 7 RIS countries that have participated in the initiative (Greece, Poland, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia) through the adaptation of heavy-duty vehicles belonging to or operated by territorial public authorities. As many of these vehicles were old, their CO2 emissions were high. INNOCAT has made it possible for participants to obtain economic and environmental benefits.

The initiative has sought active participation by the public authorities and political leaders, heads of companies and business facilitators involved in areas such as vehicle maintenance, waste management and secondary raw materials. The involvement of academic, training, research and innovation-based organisations has also been considered.
