The first marine floating laboratory in europe is working at full capacity

2018.10.22

HarshLab1.0

Following its official opening last June in the port of Bermeo, the first offshore marine floating laboratory in Europe, called HarshLab1.0, was commissioned in September.

The manoeuvre consisted of its towing from the port of Bermeo to its final location in the marine energy Bimep experimentation area, in Armintza.

The complicated manoeuvre of hooking it up to the three previously installed mooring lines was carried out there: they will moor it in a particularly complicated place, with a depth of 65 m and hit by the heavy swell that is characteristic of the area.

With a diameter of five metres and weighing 10 tonnes, this infrastructure is capable of housing up to 765 samples of materials and components in three exposure areas (atmospheric, splash and immersion).

HarshLab1.0 is open to any company or research centre that needs to conduct tests in a real offshore environment. It is the ideal complement for ageing tests performed in the laboratory on different components and materials for the offshore world.

There are currently eight companies testing at the HarshLab1.0. The initial occupancy is around 30%.
