Urban regeneration beyond construction: comfortable design of urban spaces

2014.12.19

Light, sound and temperature are three main sensory elements that make us accept or reject a public space depending on how we perceive it

The so called concept of environmental comfort, is a parameter of urban quality that TECNALIA is currently studying, analyzing and evaluating to integrate it in its CUP methodology ("Comfortable Urban Place").

Cities are spaces for meeting and of social cohesion, places where to exchange experiences and information which in turn will provide new ways of doing things and a sense of belonging to those who live there. Among other functions, cities have a clear residential function, where the availability of quality housing is a key variable. However, the reasons why cities have constituted and still constitute a pole of attraction for citizens is that they also offer wider functions and services (amenities) which in turn contribute greatly to the perceived value of the urban structure.

COMFORT AND QUALITY

In recent years citizens have become more aware of the city as an extension of their home, perceiving urban spaces as places to live. Thus, citizens expect these places to fulfil a certain number of comfort and quality criteria for them being able to enjoy the places. Designing, renovating or developing urban spaces without consulting wider groups of interest and citizens as users of urban spaces may probably result in a rejection from citizens and consequently to the emergence of underused spaces disconnected from citizens. Other manifestations of rejection may consist in careless use and deterioration of spaces and/or citizens’ protests.

For these reasons, urban regeneration and renewal should not only address housing demands and needs but also the creation of urban spaces that will enhance the services provided by houses and represent an extension of these.
