Cities: keys to face the challenges of climate change

2017.11.24

The evaluation of the vulnerability and the implementation of the adaptation measures in cities are essential tools for decision-making

CO2 emissions have increased yet again this year. A study conducted by TECNALIA and AZTI-TECNALIA warns that the rise in the sea-level by 2100 will mean that our beaches will be reduced by an average of 20 metres and the flood areas will be significantly increased.

Cities are key for the European economy as they concentrate the majority of the continent's assets, capital and population. One of the main challenges that cities face today are the increasingly frequent extreme climate events associated with climate change. Local and regional governments must face these challenges and to do so, they have met at the Bonn Climate Change Conference (COP23), among other aspects.

In this conference, a series of methodologies and tools have been presented for the evaluation of the vulnerability and the implementation of adaptation measures, whereby we have participated in their elaboration. Their purpose is to support decision-making and the drawing up of robust adaptation strategies that enable the necessary resilience at a municipal level to be increased.
