HOMELAB in DERIO (Bizkaia)

This is an apartment of some 45 m2 with an entry hall, open-plan living/dining room and kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. The apartment is fully furnished and equipped with the following smart environmental control and home activity monitoring technologies:

This equipment makes the homelab an ideal environment for:

  • Demonstrations and usability tests.
  • Integration and testing of new sensors and detection systems.
  • Laboratory tests to monitor the activity and habits of people at home and/or to detect behavioural patterns and alterations to them.
  • Demonstration and usability tests for interactive TV services.
  • Integration and testing of new third-party equipment and solutions in a digital home platform.

This is an apartment of some 50 m2 with two observation rooms in an ideal environment for:

  • Usability tests in actual environments
  • The observation of daily tasks in order to identify needs

biomechanical laboratory

This is a 90 m2 motion lab to study the human motion with several platforms:

  • Real-time digital motion capture system (Hawk Digital Real Time System)
  • AMTI BP40060 Force platforms
  • Pressure distribution sensing mats from Tekscan
  • Gait analysis (GAITRite platinum GRP-20)
  • JR-3-6-D force sensor
  • Portable heartrate & respiratory rate sensor

PHYSIOLOGICAL SIGNAL ANALYSIS LABORATORY

This is a 40 m2 laboratory for biopotential measurements and physological parameters:

  • ECG
  • EMG
  • Ey-tracking
  • Spirometry
  • Oximetry
  • Pulse

This physiological signal analysis laboratory is located at:

Biological Testing Centre

It involves a cell culture room fully equipped to perform:

  • Quantification of cells and their corresponding physical-chemical properties.
  • PCRs. It is a technique that enables to amplify a large number of copies of a specific DNA sequence.
  • Long-term cell line preservation.
  • Paraffin embedding of tissues for histological samples.
  • Inverted optical microscopy.
  • Semi-automated coagulation analysis.
  • Fluorescence microscopy.

This centre is located at:

Biotechnology & Microbiology Centre

This is a biological testing lab ideal to conduct:

  • UV/VIS cell spectrophotometry.
  • UV/VIS microplate spectrophotometry.
  • Fluorescence spectrometry.
  • Sample freeze-drying.
  • Determination of hydrophobicity and hydrophility.
  • Temperature, time, moisture and light programming for microbial growth.
  • Toxicity and biocompatibility tests of biomedical products.

Ingredients laboratory

This is a room of about 36 m2 for carrying out the researchers and tasks oriented to the obtaining of ingredients and/or bioactive compounds:

  • Accelerated or pressurized extraction with solvents
  • Solid/Liquid and Liquid/Liquid extraction plants
  • Extracts purification technology/Active compounds isolation: ultra- and nano-filtration, column chromatography, solid phase extraction, electro-membranes, etc.
  • Characterization equipment: dietetic fibre, protein content, functional compounds, etc. including ultrahigh pressure liquid chromatography coupled to double mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS/MS) and multidimensional gas chromatography coupled to double mass spectroscopy (GCxGC/MS/MS), as well as other convectional detectors.

Micro- & nano-encapsulation laboratory

This is a room of 65 m2 with advanced equipment to carry out the stabilization and protection of active ingredients and the immobilization of microorganisms for fermentative processes:

  • Wide variety of easily scalable technologies: spray-dryer, fluid bed coater, several technologies of capillary jet breakage, coacervation, interfacial polymerization, micro- and nano-emulsions…
  • Size and shape of microcpasules by optical analysis
  • Determination of nanoparticles size and Zeta potential
  • Stability and functionality evaluation equipment

This laboratory is located at:

Preservation and packaging laboratory

This is a room of 78 m2 adequately equipped for:

  • Obtaining of biopolymeric films by casting
  • Application of biopolymeric coatings on food and packaging materials
  • Incorporation of active compounds to films and coatings
  • Obtaining of bionanofillers by chemical method
  • Biopolymeric films characterization: mechanical properties, solubility, thermal behavior, water vapor permeability
  • Food texture analysis
  • Main equipment: climatic chamber, hot press and mixer for film obtaining, coating application equipment, water vapor permeability equipment, texturometer, water activity equipment

This laboratory is located at:

Oenology laboratory

This is a room of 34 m2 with specific equipment for developing the research activities in the line of oenology:

  • Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography with several detectors
  • Equipment to evaluate different parameters in grapes, wine and wood (pH, alcoholic degree, sugars, volatile acidity, total acidity, sulphurous, turbidity, colour, volatile compounds, polyphenols, tannins, other molecules and dissolved oxygen, among others)
  • Organoleptic analysis

This laboratory is located at:

Bioprocess and Microbiology laboratory

This is composed by three rooms with a total of 110 m2 to perform:

  • Discontinuous and continuous fermentation at the 2-liter scale
  • Kinetic assays or endpoint assays using UV/VIS microplate spectrophotometry
  • Study of aerobic and anaerobic growth of microorganisms (temperature, pH, biomass, sugars, optical density, etc.)
  • Study of the antimicrobial activity against selected microorganisms
  • Fermentation and enzymatic processes for obtaining bioactive compounds
  • Isolation, selection and identification of microorganisms
  • Microbiology cleanroom with biological biosafety cabinet and micro-anaerobic cabinet
  • Digestibility study of complex matrices
  • Fluorescence and optical microscopy both direct as inverted.

This laboratory is located at:

Cell Culture Laboratory

This is a cleanroom research laboratory 9 m2 for testing on:

  • Cell lines of animal and plant origin
  • Growth of adherent and suspension cells
  • Evaluation of the cytotoxicity
  • Determination of bioavailability of compounds or ingredients

This laboratory is located at:
