TECNALIA awards University of Seville for its education in energy efficiency

2010.08.10

Recognition of its decisive participation in transposition to Spain of the European Directive on Energy Efficiency in Buildings.

The Tecnalia Construction Unit has awarded the University of Seville for its education aimed at university graduate and postgraduate students, the training of professionals through their own Master’s degrees, as well as for their decisive participation in the transposition to Spain of the European Directive on Energy Efficiency in Buildings.

The Tecnalia Construction Unit has been participating in the last two years in drawing up ILETE (Initiative for Training in Energy Efficiency in Europe), a project funded by the European Commission within the Intelligent Energy remit. The goal of this project is to use training for energy efficiency as another tool to introduce energy efficiency as a fundamental aspect of building, both for professionals in the construction industry as well as for students who will design future buildings.

One of the initiatives within the ILETE Project was to award the Spanish university which most undertakes activities in the field of training for energy efficiency in buildings.

The Tecnalia Construction Unit, in the name of the European Commission, awarded the “ILETE Prize” to the University of Seville, represented by Mr Servando Alvárez, for their longstanding success in training aimed at university graduate and postgraduate students, the education of professionals through their own Master’s degrees, as well as for their decisive participation in the transposition to Spain of the European Directive on Energy Efficiency in Buildings.

The award ceremony took place within the framework of the inaugural events of the new `KUBIK by Tecnalia´ experimental building, held on 10 June last at the Bizkaia Technological Park.

`KUBIK by Tecnalia´ is a totally modular building which is flexible, can be dismantled and is unique Worldwide for R+D in the development of industrialised and efficient products and equipment, from an energy and acoustic perspective. The Project is aimed at developing new concepts, products and services for improving Energy Efficiency in Buildings.

The development of this installation will enable being in the leadership, at a technological level, of the “European initiative for Efficient Buildings” focused on technologies, materials and systems for the drastic reduction in energy consumption and of CO2 emissions in buildings.

The principal uniqueness of KUBIK is, according to its promoters, “its ability to generate realistic scenarios on which research can be undertaken as regards energy efficiency and resulting from the interaction between building solutions, the intelligent management of air-conditioning and illumination, and power supply from renewable energy”.

The ILETE Project is made up of eight European partners (Germany, Austria, Spain, France, Italy, Romania and Poland). Together with these, various papers have been drawn up and tools developed in order to support this training for energy efficiency in buildings. Also, those in charge of the project have created a data base that brings together on a blog the most important activities of the courses for energy efficiency already existing in these countries (www.energiaenedificacion.com, a blog managed by the Tecnalia Construction Unit. With the support of the University of the Basque Country, they have also drawn up an international Master’s degree aimed at undergraduate students while, for professionals in construction, a course has been devised consisting of 12 lectures on energy efficiency to take place during the actual building. Finally, work has been done on the standardisation of energy certification through the pooling of the diverse methodologies currently existing. All the information mentioned is available on the project’s web page (www.ilete.eu).
