Anabel Pérez-Checa, cum laude doctor for her thesis on the development of new alloys with high-temperature shape memory

2019.07.02

The work has been developed in BCMaterials in collaboration with the UPV/EHU

Our colleague Anabel Pérez-Checa, researcher at the Metallography Laboratory of the Industry Lab_Services Area, presented her thesis titled Development of New High Temperature Ni-Mn-Ga based Shape Memory Alloys on June 14, carried out BCMaterials jointly with the Department of Electricity and Electronics of the UPV/EHU.

Tutored by Professors José Manuel Barandiarán (UPV/EHU and BCMaterials) and Volodymyr Chernenko (Ikerbasque Research Professor, UPV/EHU and BCMaterials), she obtained the summa cum laude distinction. The jury was made up of Professor Fernando Plazaola (UPV/EHU) as presiding judge; Professor Iñaki Pérez-Landazabal (UPNA) as secretary, and Professor Lara Righi (Università degli Studi di Parma) as the spokesperson.

New alloys with shape memory

The thesis focuses on the development of new alloys with both conventional and magnetic memory. The aim is to obtain large, reversible deformations at high temperatures.

Different systems based on Ni-Mn-Ga and Ni-Mn-Ga-Fe-Co-Cu have been studied and the relationship between composition, structure and magnetic properties has been analysed. The use of large European neutron facilities has allowed to elucidate the atomic order present in these alloys, as well as the magnetic contribution of the different atoms to the system.

This thesis is an advance in the study of new materials such as sensors and/or actuators in fields such as aeronautics and the automotive industry.

Congratulations Anabel!
