New automated test bench for characterisation of edge protection systems (TEPS)

2017.04.27

Temporary Works Equipment (TWE) manufacturers will be able to validate the design of the product and reduce the time to market.

TECNALIA´s Structural Safety Laboratory has implemented a new test bench for temporary edge protection systems (TEPS)1 at its Azpeitia site for the characterisation of resistance to static and dynamic loads in accordance with UNE EN 13374:2013.

This type of characterisation ensures compliance with mechanical strength requirements to guarantee the operator's safety in the work area.

The new test bench is fitted with load and displacement measurement devices, recorded using automatic data collection equipment. In this way, the load-deflection ratio of the different components is obtained, enabling the instant and residual deformations to be evaluated.

On the other hand, the equipment allows pendular impact tests with a rounded-conical bag to ensure that the system can absorb the impact energies produced by an operator falling, for example.

According to the engineer, Felix Astorkia, head of TWE testing, this new equipment covers the need for the evaluation of edge protections in light of the market's absence of laboratories with this capacity. The availability of this equipment enables manufacturers to validate preliminary designs through testing and obtain the final classification in accordance with UNE EN 13374:2013.

TECNALIA is the benchmark laboratory in the national TWE testing market, with equipment to characterise products such as scaffolding, shoring towers, access towers, edge protections, pillars and struts, staircases, etc.

  • (1)TEPS: Temporary Edge Protection Systems. Used in construction works to prevent people or objects falling to a lower level.
  • (2)TWE: Temporary Works Equipment. Equipment for temporary works used in construction, civil works and maintenance operations, as well as for temporary structures formed by the actual equipment.
