CIRMET: Innovative and flexible solutions for more resource, material and energy efficiency in processes with intensive consumption and emissions

The CIRMET project, as part of the HORIZON 2020 programme, has developed innovative and efficient solutions based on modular, versatile and smart processing units to provide flexibility and resource efficiency in resource-intensive processes.

These solutions enable the development of sustainable technologies for the recovery of high-value metals from industrial waste or by-products, technologies for the transformation of industrial residual heat into mechanical energy, and a platform for optimising industrial production processes through the combination of versatile, scalable and replicable digital tools.

Three innovative and flexible solutions

  • 24 May: Focus on the EFFIMELT system, an innovative solution for recovering high-value metals from industrial waste and by-products. Based on a high-power thermal plasma-heated furnace using biogenic carbon processed from biomass, the system represents a sustainable and versatile solution that can be integrated into any energy-intensive industrial process unit to give waste a second life.
  • 27 May: Focus on RECUWASTE technology, based on the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) that transforms industrial heat into mechanical energy to power an air compressor, thus reducing electricity consumption. The use of a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and energy storage systems further increases its flexibility, allowing the demand and supply of compressed air to be adapted.
  • 3 June: Focus on the Analytics for Factories 4.0 (AAF4.0) platform for optimising industrial production processes through a combination of a complete set of versatile, scalable, and replicable physical and digital tools. The solution has adopted Industry 4.0 concepts that affect the entire supply chain, from raw material suppliers to waste, including the product processor, covering all stages of the life cycle.

More about the CIRMET initiative

  • It was designed in 2018 as part of the HORIZON 2020 programme with the aim of finding innovative and efficient solutions based on modular, versatile and smart processing units to provide flexibility and resource efficiency in energy-intensive processes.
  • This project has a budget of more than €10m, is coordinated by TECNALIA and has another 14 participants, six of whom are Spanish state companies linked to the Basque Country’s metallurgical recycling industry.
