Fire spread on façades is considered to be one of the fastest routes of fire propagation in buildings. The new Directive (EU) 2018/844 on Energy Efficiency establishes a clear strategy or roadmap and the necessary funding mechanisms to achieve total renovation of building stock. This will lead to highly energy efficient and decarbonised buildings by 2050.

Façade renovation will be one of the keys to achieve greater building energy efficiency and thermal comfort, thus reducing consumers’ energy bills. New materials, products and systems must be incorporated into the building envelope, taking into account the risks associated with the use of combustible materials and products, and the generation of new fire spread routes.

It is essential to be aware of the requirements to be met by these materials and products, to analyse how fire spreads on different kinds of façades, and to stay abreast of the design and existing solutions to reduce or stop fire spread. It is also necessary to comply with current legislation in these façade renovation projects.
