The San Sebastian Festival has opened the call for entries for the 8th Zinemaldia Startup Challenge, an initiative that brings together technology, entrepreneurship and audiovisual creation and is looking for start-ups and innovative projects from Spain and Europe

Technology and talent to transform the audiovisual sector
The call for entries is part of Zinemaldia & Technology, a strategic commitment by the Festival to establish itself as a meeting place for the audiovisual industry and the technology sector, encouraging collaboration and the exchange of knowledge between the two fields.
Zinemaldia Startup Challenge is also part of Spanish Screenings: Financing & Tech, an initiative aimed at attracting talent, investment and new business opportunities in the cultural and creative sector.
Who is this call aimed at?
The initiative is aimed at entrepreneurs and newly created start-ups developing solutions based on new technologies applied to the audiovisual sector.
Projects need to:
- Have been incorporated after 31 December 2020.
- Apply technology in the audiovisual sector.
- Be resident in Spain or in another European country for tax purposes.
- Consider the possibility of setting up their business operation in the Basque Country.
Presentation of projects and networking opportunities
A panel of experts will select 10 projects for the final (five Spanish and five European), which will be presented during Zinemaldia & Technology, which will be held as part of the San Sebastian Festival.
The event will also include a discussion between industry professionals on topical issues and provide participants the opportunity to meet potential strategic partners.
Prizes
- Two independent juries will award two prizes of €10.000 to the best Spanish and European projects.
- They will also give a special mention with prize money of €3,000 in recognition of the entrepreneurial values of one of the ten selected projects.
TECNALIA, as a collaborating entity
The Zinemaldia Start-up Challenge is the flagship initiative of the Zinemaldia & Technology conference, organised by the San Sebastian Festival: it is run in collaboration with TECNALIA, ALÍA (the Audiovisual Industry Alliance) and Vicomtech, strengthening the link between technology, creativity and applied innovation.
