Find out about the latest trends in fire safety
TECNALIA will take part in the “Scientific Advances in Fire Protection in the 21st Century” technical conference organised by the Department of Emergency Services and Civil Protection of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, in collaboration with the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) and the Observatory for Risk and Accident Prevention (OPRA by its Spanish acronym).
This is a flagship event for professionals in the fields of fire safety, engineering, construction, risk management and public administration.
- The conference will look at the state of the art in fire safety, the latest scientific advances and the shift towards performance-based design approaches, which are becoming increasingly important in meeting the challenges posed by the buildings, infrastructure and industrial processes of the future.
- The event will provide an opportunity to learn about current and future trends in building regulations and fire safety, along with the latest developments in fire modelling, risk analysis, smoke control and the assessment of new fire scenarios.
TECNALIA’s participation
Speakers will include Xabier Olano-Azkune, Head of the Strategic Centre of Excellence in Fire Safety at TECNALIA.
- His presentation will be entitled “Research and development of experimental campaigns for analysing and assessing new fire scenarios”, and will focus on scientific and technological advances in understanding and assessing the risks associated with emerging fire scenarios.

The conference will feature a number of internationally renowned experts in fire science and engineering, including:
- Jimmy Jönsson, former president of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE).
- Gabriele Vigne, Chief Scientific Officer at JVVA Fire & Risk.
- Xabier Olano-Azkune, Head of Fire Safety Strategy at TECNALIA.
- Guillermo Rein, lecturer and researcher at Imperial College London, an internationally recognised authority on fire science.
