  • Basque technology was the winner in the "Best use of Data Science/Artificial Intelligence for Industry 4.0" category as it fosters the transformation of the industry through digitalisation, data analytics and machine learning

16 September 2019. The Tecnalia research and technological development centre and Gestamp won the European award for their smart system for the diagnosis of energy improvements in industrial production processes for Industry 4.0. The DatSci Awards, promoted by the Big Data Value Association, recognise the best European Big Data, data processing and artificial intelligence initiatives and their application in industry and in society.

This September, the best initiatives in the past year have been announced and Basque technology is the winner in the "Best use of Data Science/Artificial Intelligence for Industry 4.0" category. Tecnalia and Gestamp competed in this category with entities of renowned prestige and experience, such as Accenture and Telekom Innovation Laboratories.

The technology, known as NAIA I4.0 (Neurtu eta Aditu Industrian Aurrezteko - Measuring and observing for savings in Industry) is a smart system for the diagnosis of energy inefficiencies at industrial plants. It has been co‑developed by Tecnalia and Gestamp and has been validated in Gestamp plants since 2018. It has the support of the Basque Government's Business Development Agency, SPRI; through the Hazitek programme. NAIA I4.0 fosters the transformation of the manufacturing industry through digitalisation, data analytics and machine learning and is currently in the product development and industrialisation phase.

This system applies data analytics techniques in such a way that the system learns the energy consumption cause and effect relationship and production at industrial plant level based on a set of historic readings for electricity, gas and compressed air consumption, measured at different levels, plant, process, machine. NAIA I4.0 helps the plant operator to understand the process consumption and carry out effective management which leads to significant economic savings without jeopardising the production.

This award recognises the work of Gestamp and Tecnalia in the field of digitalisation, as the European DatSci Awards, which have been awarded since 2016, are one of Europe's most prestigious distinctions in this field. They recognise the application of R&D and innovation in the field of data science in industry and the impact of science and European researchers on companies and society.
