Tecnalia develops a high-speed fire door

2011.12.14

Tecnalia has participated in the development of a high-speed door with high-performance fire resistant features.

NOFIRE European Project, coordinated by Tecnalia, has solved two big challenges by putting two technologies together into one, a move which so far has prevented having a door that is simultaneously a high-speed door and a fire door.

The new systems that have been researched in this project to develop the door increase safety, improve thermal performance and lead to the developing of more competitive market products that meet the strictest safety and prevention requirements laid down by the regulations.

Among the main results obtained is the increase in the thermal insulation of the door achieving 113 minutes of resistance and thus an EI290 E120 classification, according to the test of the EN 1634-1: 2008 standard. With an opening speed of 1.5 m/s and a closing speed of 0.5m/s, this door can be classed as high-speed.

What is more, it has been possible to successfully incorporate the safety devices that ensure the correct functioning of the door at all times and the preventing of danger situations. On top of that, the innovative design of the operating mechanism, which so far is unique, opens up a new showcase with new products in mind.

With this project it has been possible to manufacture a door that breaks with preconceived ideas, a fire door that moves quickly. Reduced thicknesses with high thermal insulation have been the basis for the project’s success. What is more, this project has filled the gap existing on the market for high-speed, fire doors

This project known as “NOFIRE” has been developed within the 7th Framework Programme (7FP), has had a 24-month duration and a total budget of 1.5 million euros. Responsible is a consortium of four companies:Angel Mir (Catalonia), Complex (Poland), Fegemu (Basque Country) and Cedes (Germany), plus two R+D Centres:TECNALIA (Basque Country), and the Giordano Institute (Italy).
