In the digitalisation and virtualisation era, pioneering technologies such as simulations using finite element methods (FEM) have been used by stamping, foundry, forging and steelworks sectors for over 20 years in order to optimise and improve metal manufacturing processes.

When we speak of predictive models and optimisation by data analytics, we should consider the importance of these simulation tools, which are used throughout the entire value chain. Additionally, they can further enrich our developments in the Industry 4.0.

The combination of physical, analytical, and FEM simulation data enhances the results when solving complex problems associated to zero defects, process and equipment efficiency, harnessing of raw materials, appropriate dimensioning of the devices, reduction of the time to market, etc.

  • We will present three innovative applications of the advanced simulation for metal manufacturing processes (steelworks, forging, and foundry) to improve quality, reduce manufacturing costs, save energy, and cut down manufacturing time.
  • We will explain how these applications have taken a step further, providing high added value to predictive models associated to the Industry 4.0 where obtaining data beyond the physical poses greater difficulties.

CONTENT

  • Brief introduction on the relevance of simulation methods by FEM.
  • Steel solidification in the continuous casting process by integrating two different software applications (FLUENT and MAXWELL) - Juan Palacios.
  • Advanced forge modelling: from the design of the machine and process, to the heat treatment of tools and products - Sonia Varela.
  • Hybrid models combining FEM with CALPHAD models or with machine learning models for the foundry sector - Eva Anglada.

TARGET AUDIENCE

  • Professionals in the metal industry who wish to learn about the benefits and advances of FEM simulations in order to implement them in their organisations.
  • Professionals from the metal transformation sector who tackle issues in any stage of the value chain: steelwork, foundry, forging, mould and tool manufacturing, furnaces, presses, treatment companies, etc.
