TECNALIA, in the field of technological services, has been awarded this international contract for the ITER (Internacional Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) project through Fusion for Energy (F4E), which is the European Domestic Agency that provides European contributions to the ITER.

The scope of this framework service contract is planning, preparation, specimen manufacturing, execution, evaluation and reporting of material characterization at a given temperature.

The Materials that TECNALIA shall characterize are Structural metals (steels, stainless steels, copper alloys, aluminium alloys, titanium base alloys, nickel base alloys, Tungsten, vanadium alloys), Composites (glass/resin composites, carbon fibre composites), Super conducting strands (Nb3Sn, copper, NbTi) and Joints (welding, brazing..). Mechanical tests, physical properties measurements and microstructural analysis will be the activities provided by Tecnalia for a period of 4 years and an estimated total amount for the services of 600.000€

The ITER Project aims to build a fusion device, twice the size of the largest current devices, with the goal of demonstrating the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power. It is a joint project between the European Union (whose contribution represents 45% of the cost of ITER construction) with Switzerland, China, India, Japan, South Korea, the Russian Federation and the USA. The ITER is constructing at the CEA Cadarache facility (France) and is expected to cost approximately 16.000 M€.

The last 5th of October  took place the kick of meeting corresponding to the contract F4E-OFC-167 (ES-MF) in the headquarters of TECNALIA in Donostia-San Sebastián and a delegation of five persons from F4E will attend to the meeting, including technical responsible for different parts of the reactor.

TECNALIA is currently conducting technological services in several countries: Argentina, Brazil, China, USA, France, Germany, Mexico, India, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, Romania and this international contract is for TECNALIA a major challenge, giving definitely the possibility of deploying services worldwide.
