Pilot plant to manufacture buckypaper

imagen de la planta piloto de buckypapers en TECNALIA

The buckypaper pilot manufacturing plant focuses on manufacturing thin (microns), porous, highly conductive, multifunctional flexible film.

The combination of buckypaper with polymers and composites offers multifunctional solutions such as higher electrical conductivity, resistive heating and sensing capabilities.

Where the pilot plant is located

Donostia – San Sebastián Headquarters

It is located at Paseo Mikeletegi nº2 in the Donostia Technology Park.

The buckypaper manufacturing process enables the production of 300 mm wide and several metres long multifunctional films with a production capacity of 50m2 per week

BP can be manufactured in the range of 20-60 gsm upon customer request. While the current product range is based on MWCNT (Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube), the pilot line is also capable of filtering other materials (nano, macro) as long as the material can be dispersed in water.

The pilot plant operates under the umbrella of a simplified SbD sustainability management framework, aimed at giving nanomanufacturing pilot plants a simple and useful framework to manage their sustainability priorities and continuously improve their sustainability performance. This has been reflected in a standardisation deliverable, published by CEN as CWA 17935:2022 “Sustainable Nanomanufacturing Framework”.

Competitive advantages of buckypaper over conventional materials

The pilot plant complements its offer with technological and business services that are essential in order to guarantee that new products enter the market.

Advantages are as follows:

  • Full integration into existing thermoplastic and thermoset composite manufacturing processes.
  • Good electrical conductivity with inherent resistance (Joule effect) allowing local and uniform heating of components.
  • Lightweight, flexible and low power consumption solution suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.
  • Adaptable properties (electrical conductivity, specific surface area, density, porosity etc.).
  • Secondary functionalities, such as structural health monitoring (SHM).
