    CO₂ capture

"We are rising to the challenge of decarbonising Basque industry"

We foster new technologies to capture industrial CO₂ and convert it into raw materials for new sustainable coatings

CO2PTURE is a strategic initiative that addresses the challenge of decarbonising Basque industry by developing its own capabilities in carbon capture and use and moving towards a future circular carbon value chain.

    • It is aimed at industrial sectors in which emissions are difficult to reduce, such as cement, steel, oil refining, chemicals, energy and metallurgy, which need to reduce their emissions in order to remain competitive in an increasingly demanding European context.
    • It develops CCUS technologies capable of capturing CO₂ from real industrial streams and converting it into isocyanate-free polyurethanes (NIPUs) intended for use in sustainable coatings for industrial applications.

A new generation of advanced materials

TECNALIA leads the project drives the development of a new generation of advanced materials for CO₂ capture, combining artificial intelligence, porous materials and state-of-the-art separation technologies.

    • In collaboration with the consortium, we use artificial intelligence to design new adsorbent materials and develop new COFs with high performance for the selective capture of CO₂.
    • We are also investigating silica and carbon aerogels produced from waste by means of sustainable methods and developing hybrid membranes that incorporate MOFs and COFs to increase the efficiency of CO₂ separation in industrial streams.

These technologies will enable high-quality CO₂ to be captured, facilitating its subsequent use by the consortium for the synthesis of isocyanate-free polyurethanes (NIPUs) for the development of more sustainable industrial coatings. CO2PTURE converts waste CO₂ into a resource, fostering new channels for its use and helping to accelerate the decarbonisation of industry.

The project also includes the participation of POLYMAT, BCMATERIALS, GAIKER, EHU and Aclima, which acts as a liaison with the Basque eco-industry and facilitates technology transfer opportunities.

CO2PTURE has been approved by the ELKARTEK 2026 programme, which promotes essential collaborative research projects. The initiative is in line with the RIS3 strategy and the Basque Country’s Science, Technology and Innovation Plan 2030, focusing on the digitalisation and sustainability of industry.
