The future of the web and artificial intelligence

Raúl Tabarés, senior researcher at TECNALIA, shares his vision and ideas on the future of the Web and artificial intelligencewith other invited experts. Raúl presents "Innovation and responsibility on the web: the political economy of artificial intelligence". A paper highlighting the political, environmental, social and employment impacts of the development of artificial intelligence and its current and potential socio-ethical implications.

Under the title of "The Web: Scientific Creativity, Technological Innovation and Society", the 28th Conference on Philosophy and Current Methodology of Science, organised by the University of A Coruña and Ferrol Industrial Campus, was held in Ferrol on 9th and 10th March 2023.

Expert discussions

Experts on different topics, such as Steffen Staab (University of Stuttgart), Thanassis Tiropanis (University of Southampton) and Fabien L. Gandon (INRIA) spoke about the ambivalences of the web, the challenges of data sovereignty in a decentralised web, and the evolution of the web in terms of standards and protocols.

Professor Nick Anstead, from the London School of Economics, focused his talk on fake news and its role in the current news authority crisis. Eni Mustafaraj from Wellesley College in Massachusetts presented the technological possibilities that enable the proliferation of falsehoods on the web, and Dafne Calvo, from the University of Valencia, explored the polarisation that occurs in the information ecosystem in Spain.

Internet in education

According to an article by the University on the Internet (UNIR), the internet helps develop autonomy, initiative, creativity and motivation and offers greater access to information. Professor Julio Cabero Almenara of the University of Seville explained the possibilities posed by the web for education and its associated risks.

Collective reflection on artificial intelligence

For Raúl Tabarés, it is important to demystify the image promoted in certain sectors of AI, and to promote an analysis of the materiality of this technology associated with its multiple impacts.

There is a need for anticipation and collective reflection to avoid thinking of AI as the key to the multiple societal challenges we face.
