AI to serve industry and people

      18 June 2025

“The DATUETAN-IA project will contribute to industrial decarbonisation, energy sustainability and training of digital talent”

How can AI be integrated into production processes?

TECNALIA is working with SEGULA TECHNOLOGIES on a pioneering project that aims to revolutionise the way in which AI is integrated into production processes. Organisations such as ACERIA DE ÁLAVA, TUBACEX, SIDENOR and AYESA are also taking part in the project.

The aim of this project is to strengthen and increase the use of AI in Basque industry by using the Data-Centric and Human in the Loop paradigms.

      A paradigm shift: Human-centred AI

One of the main challenges is to move from algorithm-centred AI to data-centric and people-centred AI based on two fundamental approaches:

      • Data-Centric: It prioritises data quality and relevance over quantity, improving the accuracy of models even with less information.
      • Human-in-the-Loop: It integrates human expertise into the life-cycle of AI models, increasing their reliability, transparency and understanding.

Impact on the economy and society

The project is being developed in key sectors such as the steel industry, with real use cases in SIDENOR and TUBACEX, where predictive models are used to improve product quality, reduce rejects and optimise energy consumption.

      Expected benefits include:

      • Time spent on processing data reduced reduced by 50%
      • Human effort to tag data reduced by 30%
      • Predictive model performance improved by 5%
      • Computing costs cut by 10%

It will also contribute to industrial decarbonisation, energy sustainability and training of digital talent.

      An exportable model

TECNALIA is presenting the project with the title “Improving the performance of industrial models by generating synthetic data using large language models: a comprehensive study on methods, tuning and expert knowledge integration” at the upcoming Manufacturing Engineering Society International Conference MESIC 2025.

This project, called DATUETAN-IA, will not only have an impact on the participating companies – it also aims to become a replicable model for other industries and regions. Its alignment with the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Plan - PCTI 2030, RIS3 Euskadi and Horizon Europe strategies strengthens its potential as a European benchmark in the transition towards Industry 5.0. The project is part of the Hazitek programme funded by the SPRI (Basque Trade & Investment Group).
