    “TECNALIA is boosting the European smart robotics ecosystem”

    TECNALIA took part in a major European robotics and AI demonstration

    This demonstration will shape the industry of the future, euROBIN, which took place on 2 September at the European Parliament in Brussels

    On 2 September, the European Parliament hosted one of the largest demonstrations of robotics and AI ever held in Europe. As part of the euROBIN, funded by Horizon Europe, 15 of the continent’s most advanced AI-based robots were on display. These robots are capable of operating in complex environments, collaborating with people and performing tasks that, until a few years ago, were unthinkable for machines.

    • TECNALIA was one of the organisations taking part in the project. From the Basque Country, it contributes to the development of advanced robotic technologies aimed at fostering a more competitive, sustainable and resilient industry.
    • The event brought together representatives from the European Commission, members of the European Parliament, and leading industrial companies and international experts in robotics to discuss the role that smart robots will play in the European economy over the next decade.
    • Participants included the European Commission’s Executive Vice-President, Henna Virkkunen, MEP Axel Voss and euROBIN’s scientific coordinator, Alin Albu-Schäffer.

    The new European technology race

    Europe maintains a leading position in robotics research, with pioneering advances in collaborative robots, autonomous navigation, advanced manipulation, humanoid systems and aerial robotics. The sector is at a turning point, as the convergence of robotics and AI is giving rise to a new global market with economic potential comparable to that of the automotive or telecommunications industries.

    For this reason, the European Parliament’s event addressed how to strengthen European technological autonomy and accelerate the transfer of innovation to industry. One of the proposals discussed was the development of a specific European project for AI-based robotics, in line with the EU’s new AI strategies.

    TECNALIA is boosting the European smart robotics ecosystem

    TECNALIA is actively involved in euROBIN, the European network of centres of excellence in robotics, which is building a shared ecosystem to accelerate the development and deployment of smart robots in Europe.

    • The project brings together 31 core partners from 14 European countries and an extended network of 38 additional organisations, making it one of the largest European cooperation efforts in this field.
    • TECNALIA’s contribution focuses on the development and validation of new robotic capabilities for advanced industrial applications, promoting knowledge transfer between different robotic systems and ensuring that scientific advances reach businesses more quickly.
    • TECNALIA is also involved in the development of European infrastructure and shared experimentation platforms which compare results, exchange dataand accelerate innovation in fields such as advanced manufacturing, industrial automation, the circular economy and autonomous systems.

    The Basque Country: spearheading advanced manufacturing and robotics

    TECNALIA’s presence at this European event strengthens the Basque Country’s position as one of the continent’s leading hubs of industrial innovation. Thanks to its expertise in collaborative robotics, autonomous systems, industrial digitalisation and applied AI, TECNALIA helps to boost technology that will enable Europe to address some of its major economic and social challenges: increasing productivity, shortage of skilled labour, transition towards more sustainable production models and strengthening of European industrial competitiveness.

    The event also showed how collaboration between technology centres, industry and European institutions is accelerating the arrival of a new generation of robots capable of working more autonomously, flexibly and safely in factories, logistics centres, hospitals and a wide range of service environments
