“With the publication of this book, TECNALIA hopes to provide a complete manual on low-temperature district heating networks, with the aim of adding key concepts and tools on the road to the decarbonisation of the sector”

District heating systems are one of the most energy efficient heating systems for providing heat in urban environments.

District heating networks are identified as key systems for achieving decarbonisation of heating energy in European cities. However, this solution is serving only 12% of European citizens today, when studies have shown a potential of 50% by 2050. Such an ambitious scenario requires competitive improvements in district heating networks.

Complete Handbook on District Heating Networks

In the last few weeks, the book Handbook of Low Temperature District Heating has been published. TECNALIA has compiled the main conclusions and recommendations drawn from the RELaTED initiative regarding low-temperature heat networks.

TECNALIA provides a complete manual on low-temperature district heating networks relating to key concepts and tools on the road to decarbonisation of the sector.

The book reviews the history and evolution of district heating networks with a focus on current and future issues in the sector. New developments at low temperature are reviewed considering the constraints for safe operation and Legionella prevention; the improvement of system performance associated with lower network losses; and the application of the latest developments in the field of data science for optimisation.

Green Energy and Technology

This book has been published by Springer Nature Switzerland AG under the Green Energy and Technologybook series: Cooperating with authors outside the consortium to bring together other areas of knowledge within district heat networks.

This way, it is expected to reach a wide range of readers, including industrial actors, SMEs, end-users, communities, and public institutions at local, domestic, and EU level.
