“The BATTWIN digital twin reduces operating costs and makes system maintenance easier”
The BATTWIN digital twin estimates the condition of batteries, optimises their useful life and facilitates the integration of renewable energies
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) need to be properly managed, both at a low level (battery management system (BMS)) and at a higher level (energy management system (EMS)). The BMS monitors, protects and optimises the operation of the batteries within a BESS system, and the EMS is the operational brain that coordinates the efficient use of the BESS system within a grid or installation.
- BATTWIN determines the amount of available energy (state of charge (SoC)) and the speed at which we can exchange it (state of power (SoP)) in a specific time window more accurately than the BMS.
- It also estimates the state of health (SoH) of the BESS system in real time, thereby reducing operating costs and making system maintenance easier.
- From the EMS perspective, the information provided by BATTWIN (SoC, SoH and SoP) defines the suitable charging/discharging profiles, both from the perspective of the BESS system and the electrical system in which it is incorporated (controlled by the EMS).
The use of digital twins in conjunction with optimisation tools is particularly useful in hybrid generation and consumption systems, as it complements data such as production forecasts, consumption and prices on the electricity market to improve the overall performance of the system.
Methodology developed by TECNALIA to characterise lithium-ion cells
The BATTWIN solution is based on a methodology developed by TECNALIA to characterise lithium-ion cells. Carrying out a pulsed charge-discharge cycle of the battery provides an equivalent electrical model.
- As well as characterising cells, this methodology also includes the development of state of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH) estimators for the cells.
- Moreover, projecting the model over a given time window provides an estimate of the state of power (SoP).
- Finally, Battwin can run on both cloud and edge architecture (on the real-time processing system associated with the BESS).
