“The AMETIC “Quantum Spain 2022″ report enables companies to understand the current state of quantum technologies”

TECNALIA participates in the preparation of the AMETIC Report "Quantum Spain 2022: A Business Vision"

As a new feature compared with the previous 2019 version, the latest version of the AMETIC Report "Quantum Spain 2022: A Business Vision" includes a section with the Vision from the Demand Side (with contributions from Airbus, Banco Santander, BBVA, Bosch, Cellnex, Hispasat, Iberdrola, Merck, Mercedes Benz, Repsol and Sateliot); a section on Quantum Ethics; and a section with the Bases for a Spanish Quantum Strategy.

The document contains an update of the national ecosystem, as well as an overview of Spanish companies, research organisations and associations, and the main Spanish quantum technology projects. National and International Funding opportunities are listed extensively in the annex.

The AMETIC Quantum Technologies Working Group’s Report has involved TECNALIA, Accenture, GMV, I2Cat and Ibermática as co-sponsors, FI Group and Zabala for funding opportunities, and Atos and Multiverse Computing as collaborators in the ethics section.

It is a useful document that enables companies to learn about the current state of quantum technologies, and all agents to have the keys to develop a solid quantum ecosystem in Spain.

TECNALIA and quantum technologies

Quantum technologies have the potential for profound and disruptive transformation in key areas for industry, such as artificial intelligence, communication cybersecurity and ultra-high-precision sensing. At TECNALIA, we are working on the development of emerging technology, combining them with traditional technology, prioritising impact and helping to minimise risk and uncertainty in the early stages of this field of knowledge.

Quantum computing

In the field of quantum computing, among other projects, we are involved in the first major national and enterprise-wide quantum computing initiative, CUCO: Quantum Computing in Strategic Industries for the development and application of these technologies in specific cases in different strategic sectors of the Spanish economy, such as energy, finance, space, defence and logistics.

The CUCO consortium, which is supported by the CDTI under the Missions 2021 programme, is made up of seven companies: GMV (leader), Amatech, BBVADAS PhotonicsMultiverse computingQilimanjaro Quantum Tech and Repsol, subcontracting to six research organisations: TECNALIA, BSCCSIC,DIPC, ICFO and the Valencia Polytechnic University.

Quantum sensing

In the field of quantum sensing, the quantum technologies team has obtained the backing of the Basque Government in 2022 through its ELKARTEK and AZPITEK programmes for the line of research into quantum sensors based on the technology of Vacant Nitrogen Centres; an avenue with huge industrial potential. The QFirst initiative works on the development of quantum components (quantum hardware) for ultra-resolution sensors using these technologies for the detection of physical and chemical properties, identification and traceability, metrology or inertial positioning.

The QFirst consortium is coordinated by TECNALIA and boasts the collaboration of the UPV/EHU, TEKNIKER, the Materials Physics Centre and AVS NEXT. Q-eNVy provides a laboratory to support R&D&I in this field. In this first phase, the laboratory is equipped with a CVD reactor for the growth of quantum-grade diamond crystals and an ion implantation column, which will be progressively expanded in successive phases.

Ultra-secure communications and cybersecurity

In the field of ultra-secure communications and cybersecurity, TECNALIA set up the first laboratory in the Basque Country in 2021 for the experimentation and validation of key exchanges through quantum channels, or Quantum Key Distribution(QKD).

Our mission is to transform technological research into prosperity and build a better world through R&D&I, increasing the positive impact of our activity in different dimensions, such as economic, scientific-technological, social and environmental.

We want to contribute by researching, devising and designing new technological solutions that reach the full potential of quantum technologies for social, economic and environmental sustainability. We provide specialised talent, extensive sectoral capillarity and the ability to build initiatives in a world that is increasingly interconnected, automated and complex.
