“TECNALIA celebrates 15 years at the helm of road tunnel safety in Bizkaia”
TECNALIA has regularly inspected more than 40 tunnels and has participated in the commissioning of 17 new tunnels
TECNALIA is celebrating 15 years at the helm of road tunnel safety in Bizkaia as coordinator of the Bizkaia Tunnel Safety Inspection Body (OITB) for Bizkaia Provincial Council. Along with companies such as Sener, Lisitt and Tekia, we offer comprehensive engineering services to guarantee the safety of these Basque infrastructures, assessing compliance with safety regulations that protect the infrastructure, users and the environment.
Over this time, TECNALIA has regularly inspected more than 40 tunnels and has participated in the commissioning of 17 new tunnels to ensure that roads are safe and reliable for users and in terms of sustainability.
During 2022, the following interventions can be highlighted: inspections in La Avanzada and Artaza, Mamariga, Txorierri and Kadagua, Malmasin tunnels and those of the Ermua and Autzagane Bypass; full-scale simulations in the Gerediaga-Elorrio and South Metropolitan Bypass tunnels; control and inspection in new projects, such as the new phase of the South Metropolitan Bypass, which is coming into service soon; and guidance to companies and organisations aimed at improving safety and the efficiency of action procedures.

The aim of TECNALIA's interventions is to prevent risk situations for both users and the environment, as well as to take care of the infrastructures themselves.
It is necessary to ensure adequate safety conditions and to promote their continuous improvement, both in terms of infrastructure and electrical energy, lighting, ventilation, fire protection and security, surveillance and control, as well as operating protocols.
