“How to use artificial intelligence in your business: the legal aspects and governance of AI”

The legal aspects of applying artificial intelligence are attracting growing interest among companies

    A clear roadmap for companies

The practical guide on How to use artificial intelligence in your business: the legal aspects and governance of AI, produced by Cotec, has aroused great interest among companies. The event brought together around a hundred professionals interested in learning how to incorporate AI-based solutions without incurring legal, ethical or reputational risks.

    • The publication is aimed primarily at medium-sized Spanish organisations grappling with the challenge of integrating artificial intelligence into their processes and business models.
    • The guide is the result of a collaborative effort by 35 COTEC member organisations, including TECNALIA, and provides a practical, accessible approach to facilitating informed decision-making.

The European regulatory framework as a strategic challenge

The guide comes at a crucial time, just as the European Artificial Intelligence Regulation, which will be in force until 2027, is being phased in. This regulation requires companies to review how they develop, acquire and roll out AI systems, in conjunction with other frameworks such as the General Data Protection Regulation, the NIS2 cybersecurity directive and the Intellectual Property Act.

The document details the obligations arising from the current regulatory framework and the associated penalty system.

Five steps to a lawful and responsible roll-out

The guide proposes an operational structure based on five key steps:

    • Identify AI use cases and the roles of the company.
    • Understand the requirements of the AI Regulation based on the level of risk.
    • Create a practical risk map that can be put into action.
    • Establish a basic governance framework with clear roles.
    • Integrate compliance throughout the entire life cycle of the AI system.

TECNALIA has contributed to this work through the participation of Joseba Laka, director of the Digital Unit, Izaskun Santamaría, head of the Software Assurance Office, Alazne Lete Urrutia, of the Legal Department, and Maialen Totorika, of the Corporate Development and Legal Department, reinforcing our commitment to artificial intelligence that is safe, ethical and in line with the regulatory challenges facing companies.
