GAIA-X AISBL is a non-profit association that promotes and facilitates a federated data and open software infrastructure.

TECNALIA has been contributing since June 2020 by providing its software as a KET, particularly in the working group on continuous monitoring. It has also been active in the federated catalogue and certification group, being one of the main contributors to ENISA's European cloud security certification scheme.

GAIA-X establishes a federated European data infrastructure to ensure Europe's digital sovereignty and implements a federation of cloud infrastructures to achieve a European space that preserves data sovereignty. Its objectives include: developing key concepts, architectures and guidelines for open source initiatives; cooperating in relevant areas with European and international standardisation bodies; developing a governance framework to meet the GAIA-X objective; monitoring compliance with the governance framework; defining a strategic research agenda; innovation and deployment; supporting organisations that want to develop and operate components relevant to the association; developing and supporting the GAIA-X ecosystem through promotional activities; providing a directory of service providers, and certified and accredited services.

The GAIA-X initiative was launched in October 2019. Although initially a Franco-German initiative, it is taking on a more European profile. The GAIA-X Association AISBL, a Brussels-based non-profit association, was created in the summer of 2020.

Its objective is to promote and facilitate a federated data and open software infrastructure to provide federated cloud services based on European values. The aim is to strengthen the digital sovereignty of the digital single market, to enable the sustainable development of the potential benefits from data sharing, and to create an ecosystem for both public and private sector users and providers.

TECNALIA is a member of the GAIA-X Association AISBL along with a further 200 entities such as: BMW, Bosch, DE-CIX, Deutsche Telekom, SAP, Siemens, Fraunhofer, OVH and Orange.
