“Breakthrough in hybrid manufacturing with the involvement of Irizar Forge and iWeld”
Innovation in heavy lifting: manufacture of hybrid hooks using a combination of forging + DED-ARC
Production has started on a key component for critical lifting applications as part of the COMBOHOOK Project: a hybrid hook that combines traditional forging technology and additive manufacturing using direct energy deposition using electric arc (DED-ARC).
This development marks a milestone in the integration of advanced industrial processes and represents a decisive step towards new structural solutions in sectors such as offshore, energy and large infrastructure.
Irizar Forge supplied the forged base of the hook - known as the “horns” of the hook. DED-ARC technology, provided by iWeld, which specialises in metal additive manufacturing solutions, will be applied to this base.
Irizar Forge, which is part of Royal Van Beest, are leading manufacturers of premium quality lifting, lashing and mooring fittings.
Hybrid manufacturing: the best of two worlds
The hybrid approach is a combination of:
- Forging, which guarantees optimum mechanical properties in critical areas.
 - DED-ARC technology, which makes the additive manufacturing of complex geometries possible, reduces time and opens up design possibilities through electric arc welding.

An opportunity for iWeld
This case provides an excellent opportunity for iWeld to demonstrate its technological capability in a demanding, real-world environment with a high level of structural responsibility.
The digital traceability, process control and adaptability of DED-ARC technology will make it possible to take the component to new levels of quality and performance.
