    Three talented young chemists have been awarded prizes by SusChem-España 2025

    “More than 70 high-level nominations have been received, which is proof of the potential of the new generation of scientists in Spain”

    The SusChem Annual Meeting highlights the role of sustainable chemistry and young talent in the search for solutions to global challenges, such as climate change and energy transition

    The Technology and Innovation Platform for Sustainable Chemistry, SusChem-España, has announced the names of the three winners in the 17th edition of the SusChem Awards, which recognise young researchers under the age of 40 each year for their contributions to different fields of chemistry and related disciplines. 

    With a total of €10,000 in prize money, these awards seek to promote emerging talent and support scientific work aimed at developing sustainable and innovative solutions, which are key to moving towards a circular and low-carbon economy.

    SusChem-España Awards 2025

    In this edition, more than 70 high-level nominations were received, which is proof of the solid potential of the new generation of scientists in Spain. The awards have been divided into three categories:

    • Futura was won by Miguel López León, for the best academic record in undergraduate studies in chemistry or related areas.
    • Investiga went to Javier Mateos López for the best scientific publication on nitrate reduction in aryldiazonium chemistry.
    • Innova - Miguel Burdeos went to Tomás Ramírez Reina, for the best public-private collaboration project in sustainable chemistry. The award comes with €5,000 in prize money, an annual membership to SusChem and ANQUE, as well as access to mentoring programmes and internships in TECNALIA Ventures laboratories.

    Commitment to research and innovation

    The SusChem Awards are backed by the Spanish Chemical Industry Business Federation (Feique), the National Association of Chemists and Chemical Engineers of Spain (ANQUE), the Spanish Conference of Chemistry Deans (CEDQ), the Expoquimia International Chemistry Exhibition, the Chemistry and Society Forum and TECNALIA Ventures.  

    The jury was composed of Carmen Cartagena (ANQUE), Belén Yélamos (CEDQ), Antonio Chica (CSIC), Beatriz Fernández (Expoquimia), Cristina González (Feique), Gabriel González (OEPM), Sonia Guri (SusChem España) and Jesús Torrecilla (TECNALIA Ventures), who highlighted the quality and transformative potential of the nominations received. 

    This annual award not only boosts the careers of young scientists, but also reinforces the key role of chemical research in the ecological transition and industrial innovation in Spain.
