We will generate BIM models for Madrid Barajas terminals 1, 2 and 3

27 November 2017

With the aim of facilitating the correct maintenance and asset management of the facilities

TECNALIA will carry out the 3D laser scanning and BIM (Building Information Modelling) for terminals 1, 2 and 3 at the Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport. TECNALIA experts in 3D scanning and BIM methodology have already started to take the first measurements at Madrid-Barajas. It will allow the existing elements at the terminals to be correctly represented, with the aim of providing a detailed and precise status of the current situation so that AENA can efficiently manage the assets and correctly maintain the facilities.

To date, new forms of collaboration mean entities must be ready for partnership, and the BIM methodology helps planners, builders and other agents involved to work in collaborative environments, allowing efficient and cost-reducing construction. This BIM methodology is driving a real revolution in the production and management chain of buildings and infrastructures. We must not forget that it is involved in all project phases, over the entire life-cycle of the building. BIM models are mainly being used for new construction projects, but they are also used for refurbishment and renovation works where it is important to introduce information on the management of these buildings into the BIM methodology.

All buildings are subjected to changes from expansions, remodelling, changes in use, technical adaptations, change in facilities, etc. from the date they are first commissioned. Unfortunately, most of these changes are not suitably documented. BIM models are built based on 3D scans of the existing buildings, and there are many reasons to do so: to update the real status, maintenance management, prepare for future works, renovation, expansions, etc.

Creating BIM models of property assets should be encouraged due to the many advantages that they provide. Having reliable models of the current status of the buildings that are going to be worked on is crucial for renovation works. Clearly BIM methodology plays an important role in the useful life of buildings and infrastructure.

These works form part of the “Technical Assistance for the Project Drafting and Architectural Technical Assistance of T123 according to functional design. Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport” contract, under file number DIN 3/2017, a contract granted by AENA to the engineering firm PROINTEC, which TECNALIA is also involved in with the 3D laser scanning and BIM modelling activities. The work developed by TECNALIA will produce an optimised point cloud, 360º images and a BIM model in the different Levels of Development (LOD) which will be later used by PROINTEC as the basis for fulfilling the contract with AENA.
