TECNALIA is working with the Surion Wind Systems start-up to accelerate the modernisation of wind farms
- The start-up from Alava specialises in the design and manufacture of advanced solutions for the renovation of wind farms
- TECNALIA has joined forces with Surion Wind System as a collaborator and technological partner, providing its experience in the design of power control systems and setting up a scale test bench to validate the performance of the system
14th January 2026. TECNALIA has joined forces as a collaborator and technological partner with the Surion Wind Systems start-up, specialised in the design and manufacture of advanced solutions for the renovation of wind farms.
The research and technology development centre's collaboration with the start-up addresses an urgent need: to modernise and extend the useful life of existing wind farms, especially in regions such as Europe and the United States, where large wind turbine fleets are facing ageing, loss of power and pressure to increase the efficiency of installed capacity. Therefore, the repowering - partial or total renovation - is presented as the most viable and advantageous option to guarantee their continuity and foster wind power generation.
TECNALIA's contribution
TECNALIA provides its experience in the design of power control systems in a collaboration that focuses on three areas: giving Surion Wind Systems access to its own developments, specialised software and industrial property for the development of the power control system in wind power systems; creating advanced tools for the analysis of loads, the segregation of losses in electrical generators and the modelling of dynamic behaviour and developing a functional prototype and setting up a scale test bench that will enable the performance of the system to be validated.
As José Luis Villate, Director of Renewable Energies and Thermal Efficiency at TECNALIA explains, "with this participation in Surion Wind Systems, the innovations proposed by the start-up will accelerate the repowering process for a large number of existing wind farms, helping to achieve highly profitable business models and facilitating environmental processing". TECNALIA's contribution is aimed precisely at addressing the main technological challenges in order to have a product in time to provide an efficient alternative to the repowering business.
- TECNALIA's collaboration with Surion Wind Systems is part of the deeptech4Impact initiative, through which the centre provides its technological capabilities. It is a model committed to services and industrial property that enablesstart-ups in very early stages of development to reach the market more swiftly and with a more robust proposal.
- With this collaboration, TECNALIA’s portfolio of deeptech start-ups is extended to 16, all of which are managed by TECNALIA Ventures. In 2024, the equity portfolio increased in value by 187%, its companies increased their turnover by 83% and attracted €74 million in capital.
A disruptive technological solution
Surion Wind Systems proposes a solution that enables partial repowering, replacing only key components of the wind turbine and reusing up to 48% of the existing infrastructure. This reduces repowering costs by up to 44%, optimising the investment and minimising its environmental impact. Its innovative design, based on a multiple drive train and a modular structure, enables a power output of between 1.5MW and 3.0MW to be installed with very low investment and maintenance costs.
Furthermore, the design of the wind turbine is conceived to facilitate local manufacturing, promoting re-industrialisation and revitalising regional supplier networks.
According to Rubén Ruiz de Gordejuela, Managing Director at Surion Wind Systems, "the company combines several technological differentiators in order to optimise the repowering process, industrialisation, improving the company as a whole as well as maintenance, by applying the latest offshore technologies onshore".
