Sustainability, automation, and digitalisation for higher quality construction

Smart construction is the way forward to successfully tackle the challenges of the construction industry

The construction sector must face a series of challenges that allow it to evolve in the face of the problems and needs posed by both stakeholders and society at large. These include issues such as:

    • Low productivity
    • Lack of workers
    • Environmental impact of the sector
    • Low adoption levels of digital technologies
    • Social housing emergency
    • Decarbonisation challenges

At TECNALIA, we position ourselves as a transforming actor for the construction sector through technology development that improve project productivity and quality. Our aim is to generate technologies, assets, and start-upsthat accelerate change towards a more productive, efficient, and sustainable industry.

To this end, we work and collaborate with the entire sector value chain to develop more sustainable solutions, new industrialised products and digitalisation, and process automation solutions, accompanied by compliance and safety assessment methodologies and processes that enable us to improve the construction, renovation, and maintenance of the built environment.

The biggest innovation challenge we face is the development of new solutions to radically accelerate construction processes.

At the same time, sustainability is also relevant, so we incorporate sustainable and circular solutions from design, material development, and manufacturing to reduce waste and environmental impact. Furthermore, we can improve the quality of projects through control of off-site manufacturing processes and on-site assembly.

Lastly, innovations related to digitalisation and automation are also important. Therefore, we develop disruptive technologies enabling the optimisation of processes and use of resources, as well as better integration of the value chain, from design, manufacturing, construction, and assembly processes to project delivery and subsequent management.

    • We will be able to achieve industrialised and modular construction products, which will enable us to transform the construction processes of buildings. Likewise, we seek to incorporate more sustainable solutions that enable an accelerated sector decarbonisation.
    • We will move from on-site construction to off-site manufacturing and on-site assembly.
    • We will work with automated systems and robotics in construction to improve productivity and quality, through processes digitalisation and the incorporation of robotics in the sector.
    • We will incorporate solutions based on Artificial Intelligence that improve the exploitation and use of data within the sector, increasing productivity and the skills of the sector's workers.
    • We will have new materials and more sustainable solutions that reduce the carbon footprint and enable waste recovery or the second life of materials, thus promoting circularity.
