Eco-cementEco-cement with low embodied energy

TECNALIA jointly with CSIC has developed a new technology to produce cements from fly ash, an industrial by-product. The synthesis method involves a hydrothermal treatment followed by a low-temperature calcination, which requires an energy consumption substantially lower to that in conventional methods. Likewise, two main problems affecting sustainability are addressed: on one hand, waste is used as raw material for cement manufacturing and, on the other, energy consumption for manufacturing processes is reduced, with resulting economic and environmental benefits.

Tracer smoke generation equipment intended for ventilation tests where gas temperature is not too high, for the verification of guidelines and facilities against fire and for those infrastructures whose geometry does not leave much clearance. The smoke generated is visible, clean, with a temperature not too high and not affecting the structure either aesthetically or structurally.

This device simulates, through the generation of hot and clean tracer smoke, the development and progress of smoke coming from a building or infrastructure on fire. The smoke generated by the equipment is hot, visible and clean, thereby reproducing the real smoke behaviour with no harmful effects on the structure affected by the smoke at both structural and aesthetic level.

Cement matricesNanotechnology for the development of high-performance cement matrices

The development of high-performance cement-based materials (strength and durability) is one of the challenges faced by the construction sector. TECNALIA has developed a cement matrix hybridised with organosilicon molecules with higher performance than that of conventional cements in terms of mechanical strength, high durability and processability, among others. This invention, protected under European patent EP 2388240 A1 -Hydraulic cement comprising organosilicon nanoparticles, describes the nanoparticle synthesis and functionalisation process and their integration in the cement matrix, placing special emphasis on the application of silicon nanoparticles functionalised with amino groups.

This invention allows easy installation of energy use systems in building façades using photovoltaic cells, thus reducing problems related to site assembly, wiring and containment of power electronics units specific for each photovoltaic panel. The final goal of this invention is to facilitate the design, installation and maintenance of such installations through the development of connection/disconnection and immediate use concepts.

Industrialised system conceived as a heat exchanging element in the envelope for energy rehabilitation in buildings. It represents a light, accurate, dry built and modular double envelope system which may be adapted to all existing buildings.

A solar collection and energy storage and distribution system consisting of a double envelope passive system at building plant level with an outer semi-transparent glazed leaf and an inner leaf with insulation and phase changing materials as a thermal energy collection/accumulation device and a smart management ventilation system.
