      Problems solved by CABLE:UNDERWATER

Marine litter poses a global challenge. Marine litter density and integrity are high on the coastline.

Any automated marine litter removal technology must recognise and be sufficiently intelligent to identify the litter collected and segregate it accurately. New solutions must find the balance between the effectiveness of disposal and the environmental impact of such clean-up operations.

New solutions must take into account the key variable of the clean-up of coastline marine litter: type of ecosystem, efficiency and selectivity of removal technologies and frequency of removal.

      Market potential

      • Marine litter poses a global challenge. It has been estimated that 86 million tonnes of plastics have accumulated in the world's oceans and between 4.6 and 12.7 million tonnes are added each year.
      • Around 99% of marine litter is either lying on the seabed or has degraded into micro and nano-plastics that have potentially been eaten by marine life and also pose a risk to human health.
      • It negatively affects vital economic sectors, such as tourism, fisheries, aquaculture or energy supply. At the European level, the total quantified cost of marine litter damage ranges from €259 to 694.7 million.
