Getting the acoustic atmosphere right in work spaces can help to increase productivity and reduce health problems, compared to acoustic discomfort, which can lead to increased stress and headaches.

When developing new products, interior manufacturers now take their acoustic characteristics into consideration as an important technical aspect. Nevertheless, they may also find it difficult to establish the ideal acoustic qualities of their products. Likewise, interior designers and architects may have problems interpreting or comparing the acoustic details of products available on the market.

In recent years, a series of standards have been published, to complement current ones on measurement of sound absorption in reverberation rooms and on insulation, with the aim of making it possible to rate and assess acoustic qualities in laboratories: ISO 20189:2018EN 16205+A1:2019 and ISO 23351-1:2020.

Understanding how to measure the acoustic properties of these elements in the laboratory is crucial in order to give professionals the figures needed for the correct acoustic design of interiors.
