TECNALIA launches a study of CuCrZr-IG alloy for the manufacturing of the Divertor of the international project ITER.

2016.02.25

For the first time, TECNALIA has signed a contract with the ITER Organization

TECNALIA launches a study of the CuCrZr-IG alloy for the manufacturing of the ITER-Divertor. Specifically, TECNALIA´sexperts in the Materials Engineering Consultancy will analyze the mechanical properties evolution of the copper alloy CuCrZr-IG after different heat treatments.

After performing the mechanical tests, accurate data obtained to determine the mechanical properties the alloy shows after the heat treatment, providing the necessary information to bring the design into practice avoiding future problems.

The ITER Divertor system consists of a ring of 54 Cassette Assemblies located at the bottom of the vacuum chamber. Its main function is to extract the main part of the Plasma power while maintaining its cleanliness by removing the Helium ashes. It is the most thermally loaded component of the ITER machine.

In the manufacturing of theses cassettes several materials are involved such as Austenitic Stainless Steels, Nickel-Chromium-based super alloys, Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel, a Bronze alloy and Tungsten (W), in this study the CuCrZr-IG alloy will be the material under examination.

The CuCrZr-IG alloy is used in the manufacturing of the Plasma Facing Units (PFU), in both the cooling tubes of the Vertical target PFU and the coolant channels of the Dome PFU, given the plasma operational conditions of CuCrZr alloy in the ITER-Divertor may involve high-temperature steps up to 400ºC.
