The construction company Obrascón Huarte Lain (OHL) relies on TECNALIA for façade testing at the Botín Art Centre (Santander)

2015.11.23

Façade testing carried out both on site and in the laboratory.

The construction company Obrascón Huarte Lain (OHL) has relied on the TECNALIA’s Structural Safety Laboratory for the tests on the façade of the new building of the Botín Foundation Art Centre. The project has been designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, in co-operation with the Luis Vidal y Arquitectos Studio and façade specialist Doval Building & Disset.

The TECNALIA Structural Safety Laboratory has carried out the tests both on-site and in the laboratory which have basically consisted of:

  • Pressure-suction tests based on the ETAG 034 Guideline for European Technical Approval of kits for external wall claddings.
  • Parallel wind load test, according to internal methodology
  • Pendulum impact tests, both hard and soft body based on the ETAG 034 Guideline for European Technical Approval of kits for external wall claddings and drop tests according to ACR [M]001
  • Cold-warm cycles according to UNE-EN ISO 10545-9
  • Screw pull-out tests, tightening torque measurements, etc.
  • Mechanical testing based on the ETAG 034 Guideline for European Technical Approval of kits for external wall claddings.

The building is organised into two areas joined by a structure of spaces and walkways as a main distributor. The west area will be dedicated to art, with a 2,500 m² exhibition hall, and a commercial and restaurant area will be installed on its glazed lower floors. The smaller east area will be allocated for educational activities, with a large terrace overlooking Santander Bay, and a 950 m² roofed public square on the ground floor.

The ceramic envelope of the Botín Art Centre, gives shape to the roof, vertical façade and suspended ceiling in both East and West buildings, describing a complex double-curve geometry. The system is constructed with 300,000 pearlescent ceramic tiles which reflect the bay and surrounding green areas.
