EPD - Environmental Product Declaration

An EPD allows environmental product information to be disclosed, aimed at business to business communication.

It is an objective quantification method of the environmental impact of product manufacturing processes and requires independent third party data verification. For this purpose, there are a set of product category rules, PCR, to guarantee the comparability principle.

Regulation 305/2011, which established harmonised conditions for the marketing of construction products and which repeals Directive 89/106/EEC, textually considers that “Environmental Product Declarations, where available, should be used for the evaluation of the sustainable use of resources and the environmental impact on the construction works”.

Construction Sector, and more specifically those companies or business groups that require knowledge and an evaluation of the sustainability of their product range and wish to detect those points that are susceptible to environmental improvements within the production process, hence reducing the environmental impact and creating a more sustainable production system.

Fields of Application

  • Voluntary Eco-labelling: Enables the sustainable use of resources and the environmental impact of a certain product to be assessed with respect to its preparation and use in construction works and its durability over time.
  • The Environmental Product Declaration is ideal to exchange environmental information between manufacturers and/or suppliers and their clients.
  • The EPDs have a limited validation period. Any modification or adaptation of the production process towards more sustainable processes can be transferred to the following EPD, ensuring that the environmental product information is updated.


  • Detection of factors in the production process that lead to environmental impact.
  • Reduction of environmental impact, minimising CO2 emissions.
  • Improvements to the value chain.
