CO₂ transport, distribution, injection and storage: infrastructure integrity and material compatibility for the deployment of CCUS

The implementation of Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) projects is entering the deployment phase in Europe. In this new phase, ensuring the safety, reliability and integrity of CO₂ transport, distribution, injection and storage infrastructures has become a fundamental requirement for the technical, economic and regulatory viability of projects.

The presence of impurities in captured CO₂ streams, combined with the demanding operating conditions in dense-phase or supercritical-phase operations, can lead to corrosion, acid formation and material degradation, which compromise the performance of pipelines, injection wells and other critical equipment. It is therefore essential to understand how materials behave and to develop effective mitigation strategies in order to move towards a safe and efficient carbon value chain.

    • With this in mind, TECNALIA is organising a technical workshop on 7 October in Madrid, which will bring together some of the leading industrial and technological agents in the CCUS ecosystem.
    • The event will include the participation of DNV, ENAGAS, NORTEGAS, REPSOL, TUBACEX, VALLOUREC and OLI SYSTEM, along with infrastructure operators, project developers, energy companies, materials manufacturers and international experts who will share experiences, case studies and challenges associated with the transport, injection and geological storage of CO₂.

The main technological challenges to be addressed at the conference

During the workshop, the main technical challenges related to the management of CO₂ streams and the integrity of infrastructure will be analysed.

    • Acid formation and acid dropout phenomena.
    • Corrosion in pipes, wells and process equipment.
    • Compatibility and degradation of metallic materials.
    • Impact of impurities such as H₂O, O₂, H₂S, NOx and SOx.
    • CO₂ quality specifications to ensure the integrity of the systems.
    • Operational risks associated with the transport, distribution, injection and storage of CO₂.

A forum to foster collaboration across the CO₂ value chain

The event will also serve as a forum to identify common challenges, share technical expertise and explore opportunities for collaboration between industry, operators, materials manufacturers, technology centres and public agencies.

The event will be held entirely in English and is specifically aimed at:

    • Operators of CO₂ and gas transport networks.
    • Energy companies and CCUS project developers.
    • Emission-intensive industries (cement, oil refining, chemicals, steel, among others).
    • Material, component and equipment manufacturers
    • Engineering firms and EPC contractors.
    • Public administrations and regulatory bodies with a technical focus.
