Webinar on energy planning for the decarbonisation of heating and cooling supply

Fossil fuels continue to be the main source of energy for air conditioning in buildings in Spain. Under the new Energy Efficiency Directive, municipalities with more than 45,000 inhabitants will be required to prepare a specific energy plan to address heating and cooling supply, in order to meet decarbonisation targets.

In this webinar, an example of a methodology and tool to address this energy planning will be presented, along with an example of its application in the city of Bilbao. Practical examples of district network solutions, a key part of the transition to renewable heating and cooling supply, will also be presented by key players in the sector.

    Methodology for energy planning

The methodology to be presented in this webinar has been developed within the framework of the DecarbCityPipes 2050 European initiative. This project came about to address the climate urgency and it brings cities from all over Europe together to draw up transition roadmaps for the decarbonisation of the heating and cooling of buildings by 2050. It also addresses the challenge of phasing out natural gas in heating.

The increasing complexity of the energy system requires a high level of knowledge and skills to address this transition. In this regard, the cities of Bilbao, Bratislava, Dublin, Munich, Rotterdam, Vienna and Winterthur have been enabled to develop transition roadmaps for the heating and cooling sector in cooperation with their local utilities.

The results from DecarbCityPipes project will be used to develop the Upscaling Plans of the two “Lighthouse Cities” in the ATELIER project (Amsterdam and Bilbao) in order to select the most suitable areas of the city to replicate the Positive Energy District solutions implemented in this project.

The initiative will motivate and enable more cities across Europe to follow suit. In this webinar, you will find out more about the methodology and tools for the planning of heating and cooling supply that have been developed in DecarbCityPipes 2050.

    Webinar aimed at

    • public authorities. Especially the 161 Spanish municipalities with more than 45,000 inhabitants.
    • Energy service companies (ESCOs and district heating and cooling project developers)
