TECNALIA will take part in the TRANSCOLAB PLUS training programme, which promotes sustainable innovation in the cereal sector.

This summer, TECNALIA will take part in one of the training activities organised by TRANSCOLAB PLUS, a cross-border cooperation project that fosters research, innovation and the adoption of advanced technologies to support the green transition of the agri-food and agro-industrial sectors, with a particular focus on the cereal value chain.

The programme brings together specialists from the scientific, technological and business sectors to share knowledge on some of the sector’s key challenges and opportunities, such as the recovery of by-products, the circular economy, sustainability and the development of new applications based on underutilised resources.

Innovative technologies used to recover by-products

This event is a free in-person training session, supported by the Zamora Chamber of Commerce,, in which Leire San Vicente, a TECNALIA researcher on healthy eating, will take part.

    • Her presentation, entitled”Recovering by-products. Making use of cereal by-products: from waste to raw material, biopolymers and new applications” will take place on 27 July.
    • During her presentation, the researcher will offer a technological overview of the potential of waste generated in the cereal supply chain and the opportunities for transforming it into materials and products with higher added value.
    • The event will explore various strategies for transforming by-products that are traditionally regarded as waste into new raw materials for innovative applications, thereby helping to reduce waste, optimise resources and move towards more sustainable, circular production models.

This line of work is in line with the goals of TRANSCOLAB PLUS, which promotes the recovery of food by-products and waste through research, knowledge transfer and the incorporation of advanced technologies in the cereal sector.

“What is lost today may create value tomorrow”

TRANSCOLAB PLUS is continuing the collaborative work carried out in the field of innovation in the cereal agri-food sector, and promoting the creation of knowledge networks between technology centres, universities, companies and other stakeholders in the innovation ecosystem in Spain and Portugal.

This free 40-hour training course, which will take place between July 7 and September 29 in Zamora, will focus on the circular economy as applied to the cereal sector and will explore various technologies for reducing waste, by making use of by-products and discovering new avenues for innovation.

It will be split into six training modules:

    1. An Introduction to the circular economy in the cereal industry
    2. Innovation strategies for reducing waste
    3. Making use of cereal by-products
    4. Waste management and regulatory compliance
    5. Government grants and R&D&I projects
    6. Internal and external communication and awareness-raising

You can see all of the details and the full programme here: “The circular economy applied to the cereal industry”.

    Committed to the bioeconomy

TECNALIA’s involvement in this initiative underscores its commitment to developing technological solutions that will make it possible to make better use of available resources, drive the bioeconomy forward and facilitate the transition towards a more efficient, competitive and sustainable agri-food industry.

Technology centres, universities and companies are working together in initiatives such as TRANSCOLAB PLUS to generate knowledge and speed up the implementation of innovations that can respond to the environmental and economic challenges facing the agri-food sector.
