"Information on overburden or underburden excavation is projected on a screen via Augmented Reality"
TECNALIA is participating in the DUNE initiative to optimise excavation processes by providing information to machine operators
The DUNE project is moving towards a new generation of heavy machinery operation support systems, incorporating Augmented Reality on transparent screens to provide critical information directly into the operator's field of vision.
The initiative, in which TECNALIA participates along with Saitec (coordinator), Lurpelan Tunnelling, RDT Ingenieros and Telesonic, seeks to increase precision, safety and efficiency in excavation processes.
Real-time information displayed on the windscreen of the cab
We are developing a solution capable of capturing the geometry of the excavation face in real time using 3D imaging and point cloud technologies, processing the data directly on the machine.
- Information on overburden or underburden excavation with respect to design is projected on a transparent screen installed on the windscreen of the cab via Augmented Reality, which is synchronised with the operator's position, enabling faster and more reliable decisions to be made without having to stop to consult progress.
- The initiative places special focus on tunnel work, a particularly challenging environment due to low visibility, dust and the absence of GPS signals, whereby digital data is aligned precisely with the physical space, reducing errors and optimising resources.
Immersive systems and advanced software
TECNALIA provides immersive systems and advanced software, which are key to guaranteeing seamless integration between the data captured and its contextualised visualisation.
Through DUNE, the consortium promotes a technology that increases efficiency and performance in excavation processes and opens the door to new models of smart machine operation in construction and other industrial sectors.
