“For the people of San Sebastian, La Concha beach railings are a symbol of the city’s identity”
TECNALIA has reinforced the corrosion protection of La Concha railings together with companies from Asturias and Porto to extend their useful life
For the people of San Sebastian, La Concha beach railings are much more than just an architectural element. They are a symbol of the city’s identity and history, which have been cared for and valued for generations. TECNALIA’s challenge is to protect them from corrosion so that they retain their aesthetic and functional value for as long as possible.
TECNALIA offers its materials and corrosion protection treatment expertise, backed by years of collaboration establishing specifications, controlling manufacturing, and conducting laboratory tests and workshop inspections to ensure the quality of these metallic elements. With this project, TECNALIA has gone a step further and combined aesthetic improvement with durability.
Laboratory testing and comprehensive coatings management
- TECNALIA has accredited laboratories where it offers a protective solution and comprehensive management of infrastructure corrosion, including selecting coatings, assessing their performance and establishing maintenance strategies.
- TECNALIA uses this knowledge to optimise the combination of materials, coatings and application processes on the railings.
- By means of specific testing on coatings and surface treatments, TECNALIA analyses the resistance of metallic materials under controlled conditions and helps to select the best anti-corrosion solution for each environment. This technical approach helps to extend the useful life of the railings and reduce future interventions.
Collaboration with companies in Asturias and Porto
To carry out this project, TECNALIA worked closely with companies from Asturias and Porto, which manufacture and cover the metal sections of the railings.
- The collaboration focuses on advising on materials, coatings and quality control to ensure that each part meets the strength, safety and durability requirements of infrastructure exposed to a marine environment.
- The combination of the industrial capabilities of the companies involved and the technological know-how of TECNALIA strengthens the value chain and serves as a model of collaboration for other cities wishing to protect their urban heritage from corrosion.
Anti-corrosion solutions that can be extrapolated to other infrastructure
TECNALIA’s experience with the La Concha railings can be extrapolated to other metallic infrastructure such as façade elements, construction components and industrial products. TECNALIA’s teams develop coatings and surface treatments for anti-corrosion and protective applications.
By means of a comprehensive management of coatings and protective solutions against infrastructure corrosion, TECNALIA helps companies in multiple sectors to improve the durability of their products, reduce maintenance costs and minimise the environmental impact caused by frequent repairs.
- The work on the La Concha railings is a great example of how technological innovation generates a real impact on the city and opens up opportunities for industry.
- At the same time, TECNALIA is strengthening a line of work that has already led it to collaborate in the renovation and replacement of different sections of the iconic railings in recent years, through supervision and control of manufacturing and assembly.
